Nonoc is one of the barangays in Claveria where the residents aspired for their children to learn how to read and write and become productive citizens in the future. With this goal in mind, they petitioned the District In-Charge to establish a school in their community. Fortunately, their request was granted, leading to the establishment of Nonoc Elementary School in 1960.
The first teacher assigned was Mr. Juanito Severino, who initially taught Grade 1. Classes were held in a private house owned by Mr. Gaudencio Rom. As enrollment increased in the following year, Mr. Severino began handling both Grades 1 and 2.
With the growing number of students, the lack of classrooms and a permanent school site became a major challenge. In response, the community worked together to secure a permanent location. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Marianito Ocbian, a civic-spirited citizen, one hectare of land was donated, which became the school’s present site. Makeshift classrooms were then constructed to accommodate the students.
From then on, more teachers arrived, dedicated to the full development of the children. Through their unwavering commitment, the school successfully nurtured and produced well-equipped students who later became professionals in various fields, including teaching, agriculture, law enforcement, and engineering.
Over the decades, the school has continued to grow and adapt to the changing times. Bryan A. Cantila, the current school head, has been instrumental in pioneering rapid changes and innovations, including efforts to integrate technology and bring the school into the digital era through online initiatives.
